England's David Beckham 'to miss World Cup with injury'

David Beckham's dream of playing in a fourth World Cup looks over after he tore an Achilles tendon in AC Milan's 1-0 win over Chievo on Sunday.

Beckham was unchallenged when he suffered the injury and hobbled off in pain before being stretchered away.

The 34-year-old was hoping to be part of England's World Cup squad in June.

But he will now fly to Finland on Monday to have surgery on the Achilles, according to AC Milan club physician Jean Pierre Meersseman.

'Heart risk' at football stadiums

 

Too many football grounds in Europe do not have the right equipment and plans to save the lives of fans who have heart attacks, a study has found.

The poll of 187 stadiums found over a quarter did not have defibrillators and many did not have emergency plans.

The Sweden-led study, carried out by a group of club doctors, stressed more had to be done as it was not always easy to get ill fans to hospital.

Researchers said there should be mandatory rules covering the issue.

Real Madrid top football rich list for fifth year

Real Madrid has topped the league table of the world's richest football clubs for the fifth straight year, according to research from Deloitte's sport unit.

Its Football Money League, based on data for season 2008/09, also says Real is the first global sports team to see annual revenues top 400m euros (£357m).

Real's arch-rivals Barcelona have taken second sport in the list, ahead of Manchester United who drop to third.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Ronaldo officially the highest paid footballer in the world

Cristiano Ronaldo banks the biggest salary in world football - with Emmanuel Adebayor the top earner in the Premier League.

Portuguese marketing agency Futebol Finance has published a list of the top 50 footballer's salaries this season.

And Real Madrid star Ronaldo, who moved from Manchester United for a world record transfer of £80million, is on top of the pile with a basic gross salary of £11.3million. That sum, which is over £217,000 a week, is without without bonuses and outside earnings.

Chester City squad refuse to play at Forest Green

Chester's trip to Forest Green on Tuesday was called off at late notice after the cash-strapped club's players refused to get on the team bus.

The game was postponed at 1711 GMT, two and a half hours before kick-off, after Forest Green received a call saying that City could not fulfil the fixture.

"Negotiations had been going on all day," revealed former managing director Rob Gray, who is still at the club.

"But, in the end, we'd no option but to say we could not fulfil the fixture."
